There are many things for expat families to do in Brunei. People are friendly and they love children.

Family Activties

It is not uncommon that the wife stays at home looking after the children whilst the husband goes to work. This is often to do with the VISA the wife is on, which commonly prohibits the wife to work unless she has her own work permit. There are many things that mums and children can get up to during the day when the dad is working, but there are also many things that the family can do together.

  • Geckos is a baby and toddler group that is run at Jerudong International School (JIS) on Mondays, Wednesdays and Friday mornings. This is a good way to meet other stay at home mums and dads.

  • International School of Brunei (ISB) runs a toddler group on Wednesday afternoon. This takes place outside in the shade.

  • The Blue House is a Kindergarten that run a Baby and Toddler group on Friday mornings. Here the children can play either indoors or outdoors and there are many activities such as playing with water, painting and playing with play doe to choose from.

  • The Jungle Gym is open every day of the week, but it is usually quieter during the week when the older children go to school. Here the toddlers can run around, climbing and playing with each other. There is also a café that serves food.

  • Muara Beach has a great playground for children of all ages. There is also a 1 km walk where it is possible to push a pram. As with all beaches in Brunei, there are sand flies on the beach.

  • Berakas Beach is one of the better beaches in Brunei. It is often very clean and people swim there. It has some swings and barbecue facilities.

  • RBA is one of the more popular sport clubs for families. They have two fairly large swimming pools, but unfortunately none of them are covered.

  • The Yacht Club in Seria is also popular among expats. They have a small swimming pool and an even smaller toddler pool that is covered. They arrange different theme nights and activities.

  • The Polo Club has a nice swimming pool and it is partly covered. They also serve food there.

  • Pusat Belia is one of the cheaper places to go swimming. They have a swimming pool and some tables and it currently costs 1 BND for adults and 0.50 BND for children to use the facilities. The pool is okay, but the changing rooms look a bit old.

  • The National Statium is another good place to go swimming. They have several pools, both for children and adults.

There are many other things that families can do in Brunei and this is only to give an idea of what families can get up to whilst living as expats in Brunei.
